I have been enjoying my time running, even though I haven’t done much of that in years due to problems with my back. I love running either super early in the morning or later at night when it’s cooler given Nova’s thick fur. And during the winter it’s almost always dark when I have the time to go for a run. I thought that a change/upgrade in gear would be the catalyst I needed to get out more often – and it was! I figured I would share some of the items that are currently making my life a little bit easier, keeping me safe, and preventing my dog and I from becoming road pancakes on some dark back roads.
First thing you need for running is, of course, GOOD running shoes. Having years of back pain has conditioned me well in this respect. I went to an awesome running specialty shop in Carlisle a few years back and have never looked back. I LOVE my Brooks. I currently have the Brooks Adrenaline — and a pair of Ghost 7 — to change it up for different work outs. Long runs I NEED my Adrenaline, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least if I plan on walking the next day. I love that many of the websites for running shoes, along with runner’s world, has shoe selectors now where you can answer a few questions and it recommends shoes for your running style. Even though I love my Brooks I thought I’d try out the one from Runner’s World… and in my top results it was the Brooks Adrenaline followed by Brooks Addiction! Nothing is a replacement for a proper fitting.
Another favorite for running no matter the season? My running skirts! I have a few from a couple different companies, but the all time best for fit and comfort are my Skirt Sports Marathon Chick Skirt and the Skirt Sports Gym Girl Ultra Skirt. During the winter I wear running tights underneath for warmth, but wearing the skirts not only camouflages areas that I don’t need emphasized by the running tights, but I feel better for wearing them – heck, I think I wear skirts more to run than I do in everyday life! I also have a top from skirtsports which is nice and warm and their gemini reversible jacket which is water and wind proof, but still nice and light for running. My other shirts consist of a variety of running shirts like underarmour, asics and whatever else I could find between Gabes, Salvation Army (second hand shirts I don’t mind so much) and amazon. I usually top it off with a fleece vest of some sort to help keep my core nice and warm. During the summer I usually pair my skirt with capri’s and a tank top to try and stay cooler.
REFLECTIVE GEAR! Not going to lie, Nova and I are both decked out in lights and reflective gear. I picked up LED armbands along with a PupLight and a Petflect Reflective Dog Vest for Nova. She’s the headlight and I have the taillights! I’ve actually had people stop in their cars to compliment our little light show because of how visible we are.
The last item that is a must have, for me anyways, my Sig. I carry my little handgun with me everywhere. I used to live in an area where no one was around, and the worst thing I had to worry about was a random black bear crossing my path. After an anxiety inducing incident in which a car slowed down to follow me for almost five blocks now that I live in a much more populated area, I always carry. The easiest way that I have found to conceal my Sig is with Hip Hugger Classic Can Can Concealment Holster Mine is black and “Zombie” aka neon green, which I LOVE. It can get a little warm in the summer though.
